Ending the Akademiaavtale with Equinor to protect academic integrity and climate responsibility
Why This Matters
For the 4th time, the University of Bergen (UiB) has signed the Akademiaavtale with Equinor, effectively granting a major fossil-fuel company influence on research and teaching. This agreement persists even as Equinor scales back its renewable energy plans, directly contradicting UiB’s Miljøfyrtårn certification and the Student Parliament’s demand for a 1.5°C commitment from Equinor before signing another agreement.
Decision making rests with a joint panel split 50/50 between Equinor and senior UiB staff with partially existing company ties. This arrangement gives the industry a direct hand in steering academic priorities, yet the resulting projects and positions often lack clear disclosure of this sponsorship. Ending this deal is essential to remove industry influence, protect academic freedom, and uphold the university’s integrity.
Our Goals
End UiB’s Akademiaavtale with Equinor
Ensure UiB signs the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty declaration for institutions
